Synchronicity, and Other Mysteries
Upon awakening the next morning, the magic of Big Sur was in its full glory. The intoxicating smells of the ocean mingled with those of the abundant flora surrounding us. Little yellow birds sang and flitted between the trees, gently animated by the warm onshore breezes. Sunlight sparkled on the rhythmic waves pounding soothing rhythms hundreds of feet below on the base of the cliffs. Such a sense of peace and beauty!
As we packed up our sleeping bags and prepared to get back to the roadside to thumb a ride, a bearded, longhaired figure who could’ve walked straight out of the Old Testament came wandering down from the hills. He’d been living there for some time, he said, surviving on Miner’s Lettuce and other local plant life.
Then he asked, “You fellas wanna smoke some hash?”
The three of us sat on a cliff watching a pack of seals hunting their breakfast in the Pacific below. I took one hit from his chillum, coughed mightily, and passed it to Terry.
